1. Project Title
Hakuba Ki- White Horse Spirit

2. Project Summary
Hakuba Ki- Japanese for “White Horse Spirit”- is Doi’s multi-media art describing the volatility of our environment. Employing visual, tactile, and audio interactive web-based global community interactions with paintings, animation, sculpture, and spoken-story forms of white horses, Doi highlights climate dangers through the world symbolisms of the White Horse.

3. Artistic Statement
My fine art is influenced by my Eurasian heritage. My father is Japanese and my mother was Czech. I was born in Tokyo and all of my family members are either in Hiroshima or Prague. As a self-acknowledged "half-breed" I possess the unique ability to blend my eastern and western cultures to assist my need to survive- to communicate and to be understood. My current painting and sculptural styles use the strokes, feelings and forms of oriental calligraphy to convey my hopes for peacefully influencing my audience. I then blend western and eastern narratives to offer universal symbols with more depth.

My link to horses is rooted in centuries of family horsemen warriors and nobles in Asia and Europe. The white horse, held sacred for its purity and rarity of color, is a symbol of Peace and Power in Pagan, Christian, Islamic and Oriental religions. The white horse has been offered as peace offerings to defeated Emperors, been the mount of conquering rulers, and is even noted as the mount of one of the Riders of the Apocalypse. Thus for most legends, the white horse is associated with upheaval- war and consequent peace. As a horse woman fully familiar with the horse’s beauty and also aware of its audience acceptance as a creature desiring freedom and grace, I have chosen to focus my art upon the white horses as a conscious balance to energies flowing against Peacefulness.
